DMT 506 - Gender Issues in Development Management (3 Credits)
In this course, an understanding of gender and why it is a development issue is discussed. The bases for gender concerns in development management as well as the theoretical framework for analysing gender issues in development planning and management are also examined.
DMT 507 –Research Methods (3 Credits)
The discussions in this course focus on how to conduct social science research in support of development management. The techniques of data collection, management and analysis as well the techniques of proposal and report writing are addressed and related to development management.
DMT 508 - Environmental management (3 Credits)
The course examines the role of environmental management in development outcomes. Environmental theories and policies in addition to environmental impact assessment are discussed.
DMT 509 - Statistics and Planning Techniques (3 Credits)
This course focuses on statistical principles that are required for drawing valid conclusions and making sound development decisions. Also to be addressed are the techniques required for the planning and management of any development programme and/or project.
DMT 510 - Urban Development Management (3 Credits)
This course highlights urbanization as a development challenge in modern development management. The causes of urbanization, the effects and the challenges are analysed.
DMT 512 - Conflict and Conflict Management (3 Credits) In this course, attention is on the management and resolution of conflicts that ensue in the management of development. Theoretical approaches to the study of conflict as well as analysis of indigenous versus western approaches to conflict management are discussed.
DMT 514 - Citizenship and Development Management (3 Credits) This course addresses the relationship between citizenship and development and how these impinge on the development management processes. The dimensions of citizenship participation such as citizens’ responsibilities and rights, as well as the role of civil society organizations in development management are examined.
DMT 599 –Dissertation (3 Credits)
This entails the preparation of a dissertation of a minimum of sixty (60) pages of actual body of work and a maximum of 80 pages in the third semester. This should be related to issues of development management as studied in the programme and must be submitted before a panel of examiners.
METHODOLOGY OF THE PROGRAMME
The programme will start with the traditional lecture method, but will be transformed into Problem-Based learning by 2010. Students’ group discussions, field trips and seminars will also be used to achieve the learning objectives.
RESOURCE IMPLICATIONS
The CDS, with the assistance of NPT/NUFFIC, is training some of its senior members at partner universities in the Netherlands. Three other members of faculty have also enrolled in the CDS PhD programme. With respect to equipment, the networking of the Centre and the establishment of a computer laboratory with a seating capacity of 25 have been completed. A thirty three-seater bus for fieldtrips, and a 4 – wheel drive vehicle for monitoring and administrative purposes have also been acquired. The CDS library is stocked with the relevant books and materials for both lecturers and students. In addition, other teaching aids like projectors, digital cameras have been acquired. The faculty for the programme will be drawn from the CDS, the School of Business and the Department of Agric. Economics and Extension. The School of Business was involved in the preparation of this curriculum.
