Rationale
The rationale for the introduction of the new Sandwich Programme derives from the current educational and job-market situations where:
a) Two or more years’ grant of continuous study leave for employees is not favoured by most employing organizations.
b) Capacity utilization of study facilities in the University is stretched to their limits.
c) The demand for development studies graduates with specific professional orientations at the Masters Degree level is quite high, especially from the part of local banking and non-banking financial institutions, as well as NGO’s of foreign origin operating in Ghana.
The following programmes and courses are available in this area:
- Human Resource Management (HRM)
- Human Resource Development (HRD)
- Environmental Management and Policy (EMP)
- Democracy, Governance, Law and Development (DGLD)
- Governance & Sustainable Development (GSD)
Admission requirements:
Applicants to M.A. Sandwich Programmes must be Upper or middle level personnel who also meet the admission requirements of Board of Graduate Studies of the University of Cape Coast. They must be assured of sponsorships.
Programme Requirements
To obtain the M.A. the students must successfully complete 30 credit hours of course work, plus a dissertation over two sandwich semesters. |

EXECUTIVE POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN LABOUR POLICY STUDIES.
Programme Objectives
The main aim of the Labour Policy Studies programme is to strengthen the capacity of African trade unions as partners in the development process in order to effectively influence the social, economic and political conditions under which people live and work.
The specific objective of the programme is to reinforce the competence of trade unions to:
- Represent the interests of workers more effectively at the level of the workplace and beyond;
- Formulate and influence policies that are relevant to the needs of the workers and society at large;
- Influence the mechanisms involved in the formulation and implementation of labour legislation; and
- Influence African and global socio-economic development policies.
Target Group
The LPS caters for the education and training needs of trade union office holders, policy makers and advisers. In addition, since labour relations are interactive (involving three partners: trade unions, government and employers/managers in the formal sector, and many more in the informal sector, e.g. women groups, NGOs, etc), opportunities have been created for these social partners to enrol in the programme. It is hoped that by involving them in such an important learning process, a coalition for democracy and for democratic participation may be forged.
The programme is therefore of special relevance to:
- Trade union office holders
- Trade union policy makers or policy advisers holding positions at national or international level
- Trade union educators and researchers
- Government officials and policy makers or advisers of management or employer organisations actively involved in labour and democratic participation
- Representatives of NGOs, journalists, academics and researchers.
Since APADEP is a trade union project, the majority (at least 75%) of the programme places are reserved for trade unionists. Furthermore, in keeping with APADEP conventions, at least one-third of the students admitted are women.

Applicants seeking admission to the Postgraduate Certificate in Labour Policy Studies must have a first degree in any subject area, and a minimum work experience of three years.
